Often times, I have observed students coming in to me for extra help on their homework.
Wonderful! I enjoy giving extra help because that shows me that a student is invested in their work!
Where we begin to see issue is when students come in and ask for extra homework sheets so they can "do their homework now." Now meaning lunch time. In a noisy cafeteria. With all their friends around!
The purpose of homework is to review class material and practice a particular skill the teacher wants students to practice. It requires a student to work independently, concentrate, follow directions and solve problems. It's a way for a student to show competence and independence! It also helps build a bridge between learning at school and the home.
Students that rush through homework are not practicing the skills they need in school and then good learning material can become busy work.
Here are some simple steps to make sure your student takes their time and focuses during homework time:
1. Set an after school routine! Students should try to spend a good hour on all their homework for the day.
2. Set up a quiet area in the home for students to work quietly.
3. Make sure distractions are kept to a minimum. It's hard to do homework while texting friends, playing on
iPads/computers, watching TV, etc.

4. If students are struggling, they can always contact me via my email, [email protected]
5. Finally, give praise to your student for working diligently! Being involved, even for a moment, lets your student
know that you are invested in their schooling!
